The Thessalonians were a church experiencing persecution, in need of some encouragement. Paul does encourage them through speaking about God's judgment. Knowing how well the church was doing by expressing their faith though love, Paul closes the letter by reminding them to continue in their good works, and remembers them fondly.

In a lengthy section of this letter, Paul addresses the concerns that those who have died in Christ already will miss out on his return. Pleasing God (1 Thessalonians 4:1-12)
